High mountain explorations, a passion for climbing, and the desire to find answers to questions about species distribution have significantly shaped the bryologist I am. My name is Laura Victoria Campos, and I come from a megadiverse country, Colombia. Being in this corner of South America has allowed me to delve into different types of ecosystems, from dry forests, through rainforest, to the imposing Paramos.

My studies in bryology began during my undergraduate years at the University of Tolima, where I conducted the characterization of liverworts in the Combeima river basin, one of the main tributaries of the Andean region. It was an interesting project that allowed us to understand, along an altitudinal gradient, the distribution of species. Upon completing my undergraduate studies, I enrolled at the National University of Colombia, where I pursued my master’s degree in science. Under the guidance of Dr. Jaime Uribe M. and the advice of Dr. Rob Gradstein, I conducted my thesis entitled “Taxonomic revision of the Balantiopsidaceae family in Colombia.”

Following this, I applied for a doctoral scholarship, which I obtained and pursued at the National University of Colombia and the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in the Netherlands, under the direction of Dr. Hans ter Steege. My thesis was titled “Diversity of epiphytic bryophytes in the Colombian Amazon,” a project that involved analyzing bryophyte communities along a vertical gradient. This study yielded interesting results regarding the species’ response to specific environmental conditions and significant findings related to the population genetics of Cheilolejeunea rigidula.

Since then, I have been developing research projects primarily in rainforest areas, given the limited exploration in these sites and the almost nonexistent research in canopy-associated areas. This has resulted in numerous new species records for Colombia, among other discoveries.

Currently, I am a professor at La Salle University in Bogotá. From there, I have been advancing the study of bryophytes with the school of undergraduate and graduate students I have beenestablishing , who have joined the challenge of exploring the wide diversity of bryophytes our country harbors. This contributes to providing answers to ecological questions associated with the conservation and restoration of critical ecosystems in our country.

Bryology is not just my profession; it is my passion, and I hope to continue contributing even more to the study of these plants with significant ecosystemic potential.
