Rod Seppelt is recognized as Australia’s leading Antarctic bryologist. He studied at the University of Adelaide and completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne, focusing on several moss genera across Australia. He later joined the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD), where he served as a Principal Research Scientist and Curator of the AAD Herbarium.
A dedicated field worker, Seppelt made more than 36 expeditions to Antarctica and subantarctic islands—most notably Macquarie Island—over a span of nearly four decades. Throughout his career, he gathered extensive collections of bryophyte flora. The AAD Herbarium, which houses over 30,000 of his specimens, is now held at the Tasmanian Herbarium.
In addition to his research, Seppelt is one of Australia’s most accomplished botanical illustrators, specializing in the detailed depiction of bryophytes. He has published more than 250 scientific papers and has authored, edited, or contributed to 46 volumes. These include definitive floras and major botanical guides, such as The Moss Flora of Macquarie Island (2004) and An Illustrated Catalogue of Tasmanian Mosses (2013).
