Karen S. Renzaglia is Distinguished Research Professor Emerita at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). She received her B.A. in Botany in 1975, M.Sc. in 1977 and Ph.D. in Botany in 1981, all from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Her research has focused on the morphology, development and evolution of bryophytes, with particular emphasis on hornworts and on reproductive structures, including spores and sperm cells. Through comparative developmental and ultrastructural studies, she has contributed substantially to understanding the evolution of early land plants and the relationships among bryophyte lineages.
Karen Renzaglia began her academic career at East Tennessee State University, where she served on the faculty from 1980 to 1997 and became Professor in 1990. She subsequently returned to Southern Illinois University, initially as a visiting research professor, and later joined the Department of Plant Biology, becoming Professor in 2011. Her work has involved extensive international collaboration and has established her as a leading authority on bryophyte reproductive biology and hornwort evolution.
In addition to her research, she has played an important role in bryological organizations and in the training and mentoring of students. She served as President of the American Bryological and Lichenological Society and has contributed extensively to the development of research and education programs at Southern Illinois University.
