NIK NORHAZRINA

Senior Lecturer at the Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 UKM Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia. Email: riena@ukm.edu.my

My full name is Nik Norhazrina binti Nik Mohd Kamil, and I was born in Kelantan, a state on Malaysia’s east coast. I attended a boarding school and a matriculation college before entering university.

I began my bryological studies during my final-year project for the Bachelor of Science with Honours (Biology), in which I conducted a floristic survey of mosses at the Mentigi Forest Reserve, Mossy Forest, Cameron Highlands, Pahang (1,545 m above sea level), recording 117 taxa. Later, I received a fellowship to undertake the Master of Science (Botany) by Research, with a project on mosses at Mount Korbu, Ulu Kinta, Ipoh, Perak (2,183 m above sea level, the 2nd-tallest mountain in Peninsular Malaysia). I have described and illustrated 143 moss taxa found. Two species from the genera Distichophyllum and Leucoloma could not be identified and are likely to be new species. I obtained my BSc and MSc from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2008 and 2011, both of which were supervised by Dr. Ahmad Damanhuri. I was appointed as a lecturer at the same university in the same year (2011). In 2016, I was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Sciences) from the University of Liège, Belgium, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Alain Vanderporteen with the molecular research project entitled “Spatial Heterogeneity in Tropical Biodiversity Patterns: Ecological and Evolutionary Processes in Pantropical Moss Genus Pelekium”. During my doctorate studies, I received funding from the European Commission Research Infrastructure Action via the Synthesys NL-TAF for a month in 2014 as a Synthesys Fellow at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center (NBC), National Herbarium of the Netherlands (NHN), and the Faculty of Science, Leiden University, which Dr Michael Stech hosted. During my stay, I conducted morphological analyses of the moss genus Pelekium by compiling morphometric data from digitised images of features such as the shapes of stem and branch leaves, paraphyllia, and sporangia.

I became interested in bryophytes after taking the Cryptogamic Botany course in year 2 of my BSc studies. At that time, the lecturer used an Overhead Projector (OHP) to teach, and I couldn’t really imagine what bryophytes looked like from black-and-white illustrations. During the lecture, I was fascinated by the information about the features and many uses of Sphagnum. Fieldwork was conducted at Mount Jasar in the Cameron Highlands, and the fieldwork report was one of the compulsory assessments for that course. Fortunately, during the fieldwork, we encountered the species as well as other highland bryophytes (mosses, liverworts and hornworts), and I was on cloud nine to see them with my naked eyes. There are indeed beautiful creatures in tiny forms. I was ecstatic when I found sporophytes, especially those with a calyptra. The reasons I decided to study bryophytes rather than another plant group are that our country, Malaysia, lacks bryologists, and I want to educate citizens, especially the younger generations, that bryophytes (lumut) are not algae (alga/rumpai laut) or lichens (liken/kulampair). This misinterpretation has persisted for generations, as older generations often applied the generic term “lumut” to attached, slimy, green growth that is not characteristic of bryophytes.

At UKM, I teach courses in biological sciences and botany, including Biological Diversity; Plant Systematics; Cryptogamic Botany; Principles of Taxonomy and Nomenclature; Taxonomic Data and Resource Management; Phylogeny; Diversity and Taxonomy of Cryptogams; Curatorial Science; and others. My research focuses on the diversity, floristics, taxonomy, systematics, molecular, ecology, and applications of tropical lower plants, especially bryophytes. Besides, I am involved in school STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) programs as the head of the BioD-tectives team, using the Biodiversity Module, which has been copyrighted, and I have been invited to give talks at various schools (primary and secondary). This approach allows me to reach younger generations and clarify the misinformation about “lumut”.

I have also been appointed as an International Relations Coordinator, Curator of the UKMB Herbarium, Auditor, and Advisor to Kelab Rakan Taman UKM, as well as a research fellow at the Bukit Fraser Research Centre and the Bangi Botanical Garden. Besides, I serve as an Associate Editor for the Malaysian Journal of Microscopy, the Semarak International Journal of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and the Undergraduate Research Journal for Integrative Biology.

I was delighted when I produced another bryologist for my country, Malaysia, named Dr. Nur Syazwana binti Munzani in 2022, who is currently working as a senior lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. She completed her PhD on Fissidentaceae, and we published a book based on her thesis. Recently, we published a new species, Fissidens damanhurii, in honour of our BSc supervisor. I also published a book on Ectropothecium from my Master Students’ theses. Currently, I have a PhD student whose research focuses on tissue culture optimisation for taxonomy in members of the Thuidiaceae.

Selain itu, saya merupakan Editor Bersekutu bagi Malaysia Journal of Microscopy, Semarak International Journal of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries serta Undergraduate Research Journal for Integrative Biology.
