Growing up in northernmost Austria, surrounded by forests with mossy granite boulders, I was fascinated already as a child by the stories nature tells us and that literature has captured in its poems and texts. The fauns of fairy tales, talking stones, enchanted trees, and magical plants that my mother and grandmother read to me later led me to study literature and linguistics but also to the natural science version of these stories: During my studies of general biology as well as ecology at the University of Vienna, one of my great teachers, Prof Harald Zechmeister, finally infected me with his enthusiasm for bryophytes. This took me from the larger scale of landscape ecology to the smallest, microscopic dimension. In this field, I have finally completed my doctorate on bryophytes on deadwood and climatic and ecological thresholds. Fascinated by these tiny miracle creatures with melodious names and almost magical physiological strategies, I still listen to their stories with amazement and enthusiasm. It gives pleasure to tell their stories in the scientific context of ecology and bioindication and transfer their magic to others. And they still have a lot to tell.
