Juan Guerra Montes is Professor Emeritus of Botany at the University of Murcia, Spain. He obtained his degree in Biology from the University of Granada in 1977 and began his academic career at the University of Málaga, first as Assistant Professor (1977–1983) and then as Associate Professor (1983–1986). In 1986, he was appointed Full Professor of Botany at the University of Murcia, a position he held until 2023, serving for 17 years as Director of the Department of Plant Biology.
His research has focused particularly on bryophyte taxonomy, systematics, floristics and biogeography. From 1997 to 2018, he was Principal Investigator of the Flora Briofítica Ibérica (Iberian Bryophyte Flora) project, a major collaborative initiative devoted to the bryophyte flora of the Iberian Peninsula.
Juan Guerra served as President of the Spanish Bryological Society from 1993 to 1997 and has held numerous scientific advisory and evaluation responsibilities at regional, national and international levels, including with National Agency for Evaluation and Foresight (ANEP-CICYT) et National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA), and Argentina’s National Agency for the Promotion of Research, Technological Development and Innovation.
He is a Full Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia.
