I was born in Moscow in a family of researchers. My mom was a geomorphologist, and my dad was a geobotanist. I had my first field work experience when I was 7 years old, when my parents took me on an expedition to the Khantayka River, a tributary of the Yenisei, one of the largest rivers in Siberia. Apparently this ,as well as frequent evening discussions with my parents of various scientific problems, determined my further preferences. I encountered the problem of identifying bryophytes while studying at the Department of Geobotany at Moscow State University. No one could help me with identification of liverworts that I collected in spotted tundra of Yamal Peninsula (West Siberia). My dad, Alexei Pavlovich Tyrtikov (well known Russian botanist), who studied the interaction of vegetation and permafrost, knew the dominant species of tundra lichens and mosses quite well, but of the liverworts he was familiar only with several species like Ptilidium ciliare and Sphenolobus minutus. Fortunately when studying in the fifth year of the university I was offered the opportunity to enter the post graduate school under Roman Nikolaevich Shljakov, who was an excellent taxonomist and worked at that time on the manual “Liverworts of the north of the USSR”. Since then, my life has been connected with liverworts and with the north – Kirovsk, Murmansk Province, where Shljakov was working in Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute of the Kola Science Center of Russian Academy of Science. In central Russia, where I grew up, these plants are hardly noticeable and do not attract much attention, but when I started working in the northern regions, it became clear that these small plants are very important components of the vegetation. Later came the realization of how little we know about these plants and, in particular, about the diversity and distribution in the north of liverworts, which in the harsh environments of the far north differ significantly from those forms described based on specimens from central and western Europe.
Starting with the study of the flora of liverworts of the Khibiny Mountains for my PhD thesis, I later was able to expand the range of my work to the whole of the Murmansk region and many other regions in Russia and abroad: middle European part of Russia, Urals, some regions of Siberia and the Caucasus as well as Svalbard.
Participation in various bryological meetings and field trips after the meetings, had a huge impact on my formation as a bryologist and became important factors that strengthened me on the chosen path. These were mostly meetings in Europe or Russia, but later also in America and Malaysia. At these meetings, I had the good fortune to communicate with well-known and famous bryologists from many countries. I would like to, but it is impossible to write about all the bryologists I met on my scientific path. But still, I will name one bryologist, because the influence of him and his books on me is difficult to overestimate. His name is Rudy Schuster. I think I was lucky enough to get to know him when I was already sufficiently prepared for such communication, so I was able to understand many of his ideas and thoughts.
In conclusion, it must be said that the community of bryologists is very special. Having joined it, I immediately felt and constantly feel a kind and benevolent attitude and mutual assistance in everything, from the necessary literature or samples for study to organizing travel and participation in field work and finally, support in the difficult days of my life. I’m really happy to be a member of this wonderful community.
