Description of Bryophyte Diversity and Evolution Editor-in-Chief position

If you have any question, please contact bde.editor<at>gmail.com

Term

This is a 4 years term (eligible for a second appointment)

Journal

Description: Bryophyte Diversity and Evolution (BDE) is an international research journal published by the International Association of Bryologists (IAB). BDE publishes review articles, original contributions and correspondence on the diversity and biology of bryophytes (i.e., liverworts, mosses and hornworts), including bryophyte chemistry, and can be consulted at https://mapress.com/bde

Frequency: BDE aims to be published twice a year, ideally in June and December. The possibility of an alternation of regular papers in a general Issue in June and a special issue (e.g. once a year, in December), or any other possibility that appears relevant may be discussed.

The call for articles needs to be anticipated, for example in February-March for the publication in June, and during winter/summer  for the publication of December.

Publisher: Magnolia Press

General background

The International Association of Bryologists is seeking an Editor-in-chief for its journal Bryophyte Diversity and Evolution. The position was most recently held by Michael Stech, who we thank for his leadership over the last few years.

We expect the future editor to help drive the discussion regarding the future of the journal and to be supported by an editorial board as well as by associate editors whom he or she will be responsible for soliciting.

In order to specify the requirements of such a position, as well as the contributions and benefits that can be derived from it, a set of specifications has been drawn up.

Aim of BDE and role of the editor in chief

This is a voluntary position. The editor-in-chief must be a leader who drives and follows the editorial workflow of submitted articles. His or her role is essentially upstream of publication (before acceptance of a manuscrit) and at the production stage. Upstream, he or she solicits colleagues and stimulates communication around BDE in order to develop interest for the journal among bryologists. At the production stage, he or she is responsible for overseeing the final corrections and making the final decision on the acceptance of the manuscripts.

Consequently, the editor-in-chief of BDE will need to be highly motivated, and committed to these tasks, especially the communication and dynamic aspects. This position can be very rewarding both personally and professionally for a passionate bryologist.

IAB support

He or she should be supported by an editorial team that he will build, with approval from the IAB council. An annual IAB funding to enable the open access publication of a few articles during the year could be discussed.

Editorial board and associate editors

The editor-in-chief will be supported by an editorial board made up of  the executive committee of the IAB and 2 volunteers from the council of IAB. This is the key to making BDE more dynamic.

The Editor-in-Chief will need to build a team of Associate Editors around him or her. Each AE  will be responsible, for example, for a specific area of expertise (e.g. taxonomy, ecology, molecular studies, etc.).

Call for papers

The editorial team should use whatever means it deems appropriate to attract potential contributors to the BDE, taking particular advantage of this change in leadership.
